Case Study - Objectives

When processing case studies, instructors try to achieve two very important objectives:

Objective #1: Assess whether students have achieved the application level of learning by challenging students to complete steps below.

  1. Identify elements of lesson principles and justify their answers. If there are actions, decisions, or behaviors in the storyline/scenario, proceed through the rest of the IDDP model.
  2. Differentiate between appropriate/inappropriate and/or effective/ineffective and justify their answers based on lesson principles.
  3. If appropriate/effective proceed to predict otherwise determine an appropriate/effective course of action and justify their answers based on lesson principles.
  4. Predict the impact of appropriate/effective courses of action, decisions, or behaviors and/or impact of inappropriate/ineffective courses of action, decisions, or behaviors on the workforce.

Objective #2: Help students who have not achieved the application level of learning, to do so by:

  • Using guided discussion format to progress through the case study (and all storylines) in a manner that makes sense to all participants;
  • Using questions such as, why, what if, how do you know that, why do you feel that way, what can you predict and so forth;
  • Challenging students' answers by asking other students whether they agree or disagree with the answer given (be sure to have them justify their answers)
  • Using relay questions of the same or similar question just asked/answered.
  • Having students who can apply lesson principles correctly explain it to students who are still having trouble.
